Descripción.

Características del mosquito tigre.
El mosquito tigre es un insecto con metamorfosis completa. Pasa por el estadio de huevo, larva, pupa y adulto. Como adulto mide entre 5 y 10 mm. Es hematófaga solo la hembra cuando necesita madurar los huevos. Posee una probóscide larga y fina que introduce en la piel para extraer sangre. Pica a mamíferos y, en especial, se ha especializado en picar a humanos. Detecta el dióxido de carbono (CO2) que exhalan los animales para llegar hasta ellos. Pica durante el día y lo hace principalmente en las extremidades inferiores. El mosquito tigre puede actuar como vector de enfermedades víricas.

Ciclo biológico.
La hembra del mosquito tigre deposita los huevos en las paredes de recipientes y oquedades en las que puede quedar el agua acumulada. La puesta es de 80 a 200 huevos. Siempre en pequeñas acumulaciones de agua. El huevo puede aguantar la desecación y la congelación, y permanecer vivo su embrión dos años. Cuando el agua los cubre, eclosionan y dan origen a una larva. La hembra está lista para picar 48 horas después de emerger de su estadio de pupa. En verano puede completar su ciclo de vida en 15 días.

Hábitat.
Las larvas del mosquito tigre se desarrollan en pequeñas acumulaciones con poca agua que quedan a la sombra como cubos, floreros, platos de maceta, imbornales, charcos tras el regadío, etc. Es un mosquito arborícola que se ha adaptado al medio urbano. Es por ello que el mosquito tigre busca acumulaciones donde se encuentre en el agua materia orgánica de origen vegetal.
